The Firepit

This is our version of the firepit designed by Flieg Hollander (aka Duke Frederick of Holland). It is made under his license, and conforms closely to his original design, plans for which are available here.

The bowl is 31" in diameter, large enough to comfortably hold a good-sized campfire. What makes this design distinctive is that the bowl is segmented, so that it can be collapsed into a package about the size of a briefcase, making it easy to pack and transport. It takes only a minute or two to set up into a configuration ready to accomodate either a campfire or, with the included grill, a cooking fire.

The bowl is made of sixteen gauge steel (not eighteen) and is composed of six specially contoured segments (called "fans" or "petals") which are connected at the base by a nut and bolt. When the petals are spread, each is attached to its adjacent petal by an integral clip to form a rigid bowl. To collapse the bowl, the petals are unclipped and folded atop one another. The whole process takes less than a minute.

The cooking grill is 21-1/2" in diameter -- the same size as the standard kettle-type grills. Its height can be adjusted from three inches over the coal grate (which would be about two inches from the top of the coals) to ten inches, to accomodate a wide variety of temperatures. Unlike most of the firepits made on Flieg's design, this one suspends the grill on short segments of chain attached to hooks set only eleven inches above the lip of the bowl, rather than long chains attached to hooks near the apex of the tripod. This configuration keeps the chain cooler, allowing a greater degree of comfort when adjusting the height of the grille. It also saves you the trouble of having to wrap the chain around the legs of the tripod to keep the grill from swinging excessively. We've used this configuration on our own firepit for over five years and believe it to be a great improvement on the original.

The tripod is made from three pieces of 1/2" steel rod, four feet long, connected with a welded ring which can also be used to hang pot hooks from.

The unit comes completely ready to use, with firepit bowl, tripod, cooking grill with chains, and a coal grate.

We've put the complete owner's manual for the firepit online here at our web site, so you can see how versatile it is. Those who've purchased other firepits like this will also find lots of interesting ideas here.

Firepit set -- $155.00

OPTIONS

Economy Carrying Bags -- two bags made of cotton duck, with handles but without closures. These bags will also fit any of the firepits with the dimensions of Flieg's design, such as the Iron Castle firepits. --$15.00

Deluxe Carrying Bags -- The perfect home for your firepit when it's traveling. The set consists of a dish bag for the collapsed dish, a grill bag (also big enough for the fire grate and a few pieces of thin 2' x 2' plywood for ground protection) and a tripod bag roomy enough to add some leg extenders or a poker (or two). Every piece is made of heavy flame-retardent canvas, multiple-layered for maximum durability. Our prototype is ten years old and still in good shape, and we tourney a lot! $60.00

Leg extenders - these are made from 1/2" pipe and slip onto the bottoms of the tripod legs to raise the height of the bowl to about 18" off the ground. This makes for a more comfortable cooking height, and also allows the firepit to comply with local ordinances that may require this minimum height off the ground. $10.00 per set of three
