Designed by Flieg Hollander, this sunshade is becoming a familiar sight at group camping events throughout the United States. And no wonder ... the sunshade has remarkable stability in winds, is easy to pitch, and sheds rain adequately, even without waterproofing.
If you're curious about what goes into the engineering of our sunshades, read the write-up on how to make one. Pay particular heed to how we reinforce the hems, orient the cloth, and reinforce the areas of highest strain.
And if you want to know what's involved in setting it up (and, for those who order just the fabric, how to make all the frame components), we invite you to look at the owner's manual. Our version of the sunshade has "elephant ear" flaps at the corners to help shelter you from side winds. It also has a reinforced ridge for longer life. The optional frame features hardwood poles, natural fiber ropes, and hand-forged tent stakes. If you prefer a low-stretch braided polyester rope that's easier on the hands, we can provide that instead of the natural ropes, at no extra charge. (Hemp ropes are also available, for an extra $20.00.) And, like all Dragonwing tents, it comes with a stuff bag and a super-strong stake bag.
The sunshade is available in sizes from 200 square feet to 450 square feet. (The one in the picture above is the 15' x 20', which works well for a medium-size encampment.) On the chart below, the first dimension is the “depth” of the sunshade, and the second its frontage dimension. The frontage dimension includes the guy ropes, but the depth dimension doesn't, so figure adding an additional ten to twelve feet to the published dimension to allow space for the ropes.

When we want a bigger shaded area, we extend our sunshade with another sunshade right behind the first one. The rear poles of the front sunshade also serve as the front poles of the rear sunshade. In the above photo, two 15' x 20' sunshades are joined to form one large shaded area, 30' x 20' in size. You can tailor the amount of space you use to the company you have that day, and to the area you have available to you.
Please note that this is a sunshade, not a tent, and therefore is made of a lighter material which is not fire retardant. (To make it out of a fire-retardant material would have added greatly to its cost and weight.) This material is available in a wide range of colors.

OPTIONAL CENTER POLE BREAKDOWN - Poles break down to 6-1/2 feet $30.00 per pole
Please note that, if you order the breakdown sleeves, your sunshade can be shipped UPS instead of by truck. Depending on where the sunshade is being shipped, you can usually save enough in shipping to pay for the breakdown option.
OPTIONAL HEMP ROPE PACKAGE - a more historically correct rope than the standard manila rope, but more temperamental and not quite as trouble free. (You might want to read our updated article on ropes $20.00
POLYESTER ROPE OPTION – Modern looking, but very stable under all conditions and the ultimate in low-stretch ropes. With metal twisted-wire sliders. No Charge
